Do my brakes need checking?

Brake pads and discs need to be checked regularly. Your annual service will usually identify if the braking components are starting to suffer wear, but there are some signs you can listen and feel for.

A few common signs your brakes need attention;

Grinding – A loud grinding noise can be a symptom of worn brake discs due to the pads having worn down to the metal.

Squeaking – Squeaking sounds from your brakes could be a sign it’s time for some new pads.

Pulsating – A pulsation when you hit the brake pedal could mean your brake discs have worn and become warped.

Pulling – If your car pulls to the left or the right when you brake, you may need a brake repair. This could be several things causing the car to pull.

Sponginess – A spongy or lack of pressure feeling when you hit the brake pedal is usually a sign that air has got into your braking system. In extreme cases, the brake pedal would feel soft and would travel a lot further than normal. This would indicate immediate attention is required and you should be very careful if you intend to drive your car to us.

We do offer a recovery service for just £40+VAT if peace of mind is your priority,

Dashboard light – A brake warning light on your dashboard could be telling you it’s time to replace your pads, brake pad wear sensor, brake fluid or if it’s really been neglected all 3!

If you notice any of the above symptoms with your car brakes whilst on the Isle Of Wight, then get in touch with the Wight Tyres team on 01983-716014 as soon as possible to book a brake repair. Faulty & ineffective brakes can be deadly and your safety is our top priority.

A note for new discs & pads.

The cost of replacing brake pads and discs is not one you’ll want to do time and time again. It’s therefore very important to take it easy whilst bedding in your new brake pads and discs after they’ve been installed. Heavy and excessive braking can result in damage to the new components and this type of damage wouldn’t be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.

How do I know if my brakes need servicing?

Being aware of the signs that your brakes need servicing is crucial for maintaining vehicle safety. If you notice any of the following indicators, it’s time to have your brakes checked:

  • Screeching or Squeaking Sounds: High-pitched noises while braking may indicate worn brake pads.
  • Vibration or Pulsation: If you feel vibrations or pulsations through the brake pedal, it could suggest issues with the brake discs.
  • Reduced Responsiveness: A mushy or less responsive brake pedal may indicate air or moisture in the brake fluid or worn brake components.
  • Dashboard Warning Lights: Some vehicles are equipped with brake warning lights that illuminate when issues are detected.

At Wight Tyres, our brake servicing includes a thorough inspection of the braking system to identify and address any potential issues. Regular brake maintenance is essential for safe driving and preventing more extensive and costly repairs down the line.

What are common brake problems?

• Several common brake problems can affect the performance of your braking system;

  • Worn Brake Pads: Over time, brake pads wear down and need replacement.
  • Brake Fluid Issues: Contaminated or low brake fluid can lead to decreased braking efficiency.
  • Brake Caliper Issues: Malfunctioning callipers can cause uneven braking and excessive wear on brake components.
  • Warped Brake Discs: Heat and stress can cause brake rotors to warp, leading to vibrations and decreased braking performance.
  • Brake System Leaks: Leaks in the brake system can result in a loss of brake fluid and reduced braking power

Regular brake inspections at Wight Tyres can help detect and address these issues early, ensuring your braking system operates at its best and maintaining optimal safety on the road.
