Battery failure is very common, especially during the run-up to those long winter months. It is responsible for over 60,000 roadside recovery call-outs each year. There are several reasons why a car battery could fail, including extreme weather conditions, the car being left for long periods, the age of the battery, an alternator failure and of course accidentally leaving your lights on.

The average lifespan of a vehicle battery is between 3 and 5 years and Wight Tyres can offer you a variety of options starting with a 2-year manufacturer’s warranty and up to a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Different Types of Car/Van Batteries

There are several options because different vehicles have differing power needs.

AFB/ECM Batteries

AFB/ECM car batteries are long-lasting and high-performance. They are suitable for small to mid-size vehicles.

AGM Batteries

AGM batteries are high-performance & very reliable batteries. They suit larger vehicles that have higher electrical needs.

Stop Start Batteries

Stop-start batteries are designed to be used in cars or vans that have stop-start technology. They help with the additional electrical demand of frequently stopping & starting.

Free Vehicle Battery Check

If you’re not sure about your vehicle battery’s condition we can test it as part of our free vehicle health check.

How do I know it’s time for a new car battery?

There are some tell-tale signs to look for when your car’s battery needs replacing:

If the battery is loosing charge or is flat, it will have trouble starting the engine. This can be accompanied by a clicking noise, this noise comes from the starter motor. You might find that some of the electric components in your car aren’t working as well as they used to – problems with your lights, radio, air conditioning and even wipers could be due to a failing battery.

If for some reason your battery has become over-charged you may notice a smell of rotting eggs. That is the smell of acid in your battery boiling because it can’t handle the amount of power being put into the battery. If this happens Wight Tyres would recommend that you have it checked immediately to ensure that the acid in the battery does not pose a risk to yourself or your vehicle.

How much will a new car battery cost?

New car batteries on average, are between £62 and £305. Car battery prices on the Isle Of Wight depend on the type and size of battery that you require.

Buying a new car battery from Wight Tyres means that you can be back on the road in no time at all and have peace of mind all is working as it should.

What car battery do I need?

How to change a car battery?

We recommend visiting us to get your replacement car battery fitted by one of our Wight tyres team who can change your battery quickly and safely.  Please bare in mind that replacing a battery in a vehicle will restore any inbuilt electronics to their default settings, for example, navigation systems, clocks and radios. You’ll need to reset these once your new car battery has been fitted.

How to test your car battery and alternator?

While you may have all the signs of battery failure, we must also test the charge voltage being put back into your car battery with a multimeter. If you don’t have a multimeter to test a car battery or are unsure how to test it correctly, you can book a free vehicle inspection at Wight Tyres, Unit 6 Atlantis Court, Ryde, Isle Of Wight, PO33 1FB which includes a free battery check.

How do you start a car with a dead battery?

If you have a flat battery and want to jump-start your vehicle, you will need jump leads and another car with a functioning battery. Don’t jump-start your car with an electric or hybrid car.

If your attempt at jump-starting is unsuccessful, then don’t panic. We have a couple of options. Wight Tyres can either offer a vehicle recovery or we can come with our state-of-the-art jump pack to get you going.

When should I replace my car battery?

Car batteries typically last between 3 to 5 years, but several factors can influence their lifespan. If you notice any of the signs of a failing battery or experience difficulty starting your car, it’s advisable to have your battery tested. Additionally, extreme weather conditions, frequent short trips, and age can contribute to a decline in battery performance. At Wight Tyres, we recommend proactive battery testing and replacement every 3 to 4 years to ensure optimal performance and prevent unexpected breakdowns. Our experienced technicians can assess your battery’s health for free and provide suitable replacement options tailored to your vehicle.

What are the signs of a failing car battery?

Recognising the early signs of a failing battery is crucial to avoid unexpected breakdowns. Common indicators include slow engine cranking, dimming headlights, and a dashboard warning light. If you experience difficulty starting your car, even after a jump-start, it may indicate a weakened battery. Unusual electrical issues, such as flickering lights or a malfunctioning radio, can also be signs of battery trouble. At Wight Tyres, our battery diagnostics services can identify these symptoms and help you determine whether a replacement is necessary. Regular battery maintenance and timely replacements contribute to reliable vehicle performance and reduce the risk of unexpected breakdowns.
