Pre-MOT Inspections

Pre-Mot Check

It’s makes good sense to prepare a few weeks before your MOT to ensure sure your car is in the best possible condition at the time it is inspected. Many of the most common reasons for MOT testing failure are areas that can easily be checked by the team at Wight Tyres. So, by assessing these in advance, you can fix any issues and increase the chance of passing your MOT first time without the inconvenience of being told your car has failed and now needs to spend time off the road being repaired.

A pre-MOT checklist by us will cover the following areas:

Lights – Your lights need to all be in working order. This includes headlights, sidelights, indicators, brake lights and finally your number plate light. Things such as unsecured lights can also be a cause for a dreaded MOT failure.

Tyres – Your in safe hands, that’s our speciality. The tyres should be properly inflated and have at least 1.6mm of tread across the tyre. Any unusual wear could highlight a problem, remember we offer free tyre checks in Ryde on the Isle of Wight so don’t be shy to pop in for a free tyre check any time of the year. Tyre problems are the biggest cause of all MOT failures so take full advantage of coming to see us.

Exhaust – With our ears to the ground we will listen out for any excessive noise or rattling. This may suggest an issue with the exhaust system. Another check is to see whether there’s smoke coming from your exhaust. This is normal on startup for diesel engines, but anything excessively smokey may indicate a problem and could be an MOT failure.

Windscreen & Wipers – Any chips/cracks in your windscreen larger than 40mm will result in a failed MOT. If you are sat behind the wheel the allowance is even smaller, any damage 10mm or larger will fail. As well as checking your windscreen for faults, it is also important for us to assess the wipers. Your wipers and washers should be in a suitable condition to give you a clear view of the road ahead. If your wipers are splitting or the washer feed is blocked, then this will require attention. You can fail your MOT for having no screen wash so we will make sure that your reservoir is topped up!

Fuel & Engine Oil – Your car needs to have adequate fuel and oil levels to carry out the emissions test. We will check your oil levels, to ensure it’s between the minimum and maximum marks and if it isn’t we will top it up.

Brakes – Wight Tyres will check for excessive wear of brake pads and brake discs as this could be an indication that your brakes need replacing and may not pass an MOT. Your handbrake – this needs to be strong enough to hold your car so we will be sure to test this.

Mirrors – Your mirrors must be intact, secure, and free of cracks. You can fail your MOT so we will check them and can arrange for a replacement before your test.

Interior Checks – We need to ensure that all of your seatbelts are in working order. If we pull sharply on each seatbelt they should lock. Your horn will be tested – Being heard by another road user could save a life and alert others to danger. Giving your horn a quick honk should show whether it is working! Finally, the warning lights on your dashboard. We will check to make sure they all light up when you start the car and that they go out before you start driving. If any of the warning lights remain lit then we know there is a fault and can plug your car into our diagnostic tool to see an indication of what that may be.

What is checked during a Pre-MOT

A Pre-MOT check involves a thorough inspection of various components to ensure your vehicle meets the necessary standards for the official MOT test. Key aspects checked during a pre-MOT include:

  • Brakes: The braking system is assessed for efficiency and wear, ensuring it meets safety standards.
  • Suspension and Steering: The condition of the suspension components and the responsiveness of the steering system are examined.
  • Tyres and Wheels: Tread depth & tyre condition are checked to ensure they meet legal requirements.
  • Exhaust Emissions: The exhaust system is visually and audibly assessed.
