How will I know if my exhaust needs replacing?
Exhaust systems are prone to damage, wear & tear & corrosion, whether that is from external knocks and bumps or age-related wearing of the vehicle. For that reason, Wight Tyres Ryde would recommend checking your exhaust system for physical damage at least once every 10,000 miles, or once a year- whichever comes soonest.
Your car’s exhaust system may give you some warning signs signalling failure or indicating that repair work or a replacement could be required.
Some of these include:
- Excessive smoke emitted from the exhaust
- Increased engine noise while driving
- A knock or rattle sound is indicative of something coming loose
- Visible holes
- A low-hanging or even worse a dragging pipe
How much does it cost to fix an exhaust system?
This can vary substantially, it all depends on what section of your exhaust is defective and requires replacement and is also reliant on being able to easily undo the many fixings on the exhaust to the car itself. In some situations, bolts are rusted, rounded and will require drilling out. This can be very labour-intensive.
You may have considered undertaking a temporary fix to whatever problem your exhaust has. One example would be using exhaust paste. This is something Wight Tyres would advise against doing as it has the potential to cause more damage and leave you facing a larger repair bill in the future.
If you suspect part of your exhaust system is broken getting it to us for a free, no-obligation full inspection will be the best and most cost-effective action.
Can I drive safely with a broken exhaust?
If you think your exhaust is damaged it will be best to get it looked at as soon as possible. Depending on the location and how your exhaust is broken will be the deciding factor on whether or not it is safe to drive.
If you intend to drive your vehicle to us then please make sure you look at the exhaust system as best as you can to ensure it is secure and not likely that pieces could fall off. It’s best to keep the driving distance as short as possible.
If it looks as though your exhaust could fall off and you decide to drive the vehicle then you are at risk of committing a traffic offence. Don’t panic, if this is the case then give Wight Tyres a call to ask us about our recovery service. It’s £40+VAT and could save you a lot of hassle in the long run.
Another telltale sign your exhaust needs some attention is if you begin to feel dizzy or fatigued. We would recommend you stop the vehicle immediately as this could be a result of engine fumes leaking into the car giving you carbon dioxide poisoning.
How long does it take to fit a new exhaust?
Just like the price, the time will depend on how little or how much needs replacing. The Wight Tyres team will aim to have you back on the road as quickly as possible. We have a warm and inviting customer waiting area with free refreshments to ensure you are comfortable during your time with us.
The most common exhaust repair carried out is the back box, this takes around 30 minutes to 1 hour to install. If it happens to be other exhaust components then this can take a lot longer.
What are the effects of a damaged exhaust?
Damaged exhaust systems can not only make additional noise, smoke or reduce your fuel economy, but it may make your car’s noise levels and CO2 emissions higher than the legal requirements. This could be an MOT test failure, as the car will not be deemed fit for road use.
More often than not you will be able to see visual damage to the exhaust. Sometimes, however as the exhaust pipes travel across the entirety of the underside of your car, it can be difficult to know for certain without your car being placed on our ramp.
